● SAA-ACRL/RBMS Joint Task Force on Primary Source Literacy Guidelines (2015-2017)
In 2014 with my longtime co-author Heather Smedberg, I conceived the Joint Task Force
on Primary Source Literacy Guidelines. We wrote a draft charge and proposal, presented
it to both the Executive Committee of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section and the
Society of American Archivists, and shepherded the proposal through a year-long review
process in both organizations, representing the ongoing need for guidelines and arguing
for a combined approach. I was ultimately appointed a task force member along with 11
other special collections and archives professionals. We formed the guidelines over an
intensive 2-year process, with final approval from both organizations in 2018. The result
is a set of pedagogical guidelines that have been adopted both nationally and
internationally, influencing the special collections and archives instructional community
and the quality of instruction in these environments in a substantive way.
